Vatapatha
(Bhikku Fan) |
| This
fan was offered to Velivita Asarana Sarana Saranakara on
the occasion of his being appointed This SANGHARAJA (SUPREME
HEAD OF BHIKKU COMMUNITY OF LANKA) by His Majesty King KEERTHI
SRI RAJASINGHA. on such investiture, there was no such a
thing as Certificate of Act, then in use to the presented
to the recipient. As such, it was the fan that legitimized
the position along with the Royal declaration, which reads
as follows. "I declare you appointed SANGARAJA of Thri
Sinhalaya (three territories) from to-day". The fan
referred aove was ceremonially handed over to Velivita Saranakara
simultaneously by King himself. Velivita Saranakara was
the last to hold this highest position. This fan is made
of ivory and ivory handle is embellished with carving grnerally

Patraya
(Begging Bowl) |
|
The begging bowl was donated to the Sangharaja by the Royalty
of Thailand, and was used by the Sangharaja on his alms
rounds called "Pindapatha". That Velivita Saranakara
lived most of his Bhikku life mainly on Pindapatha, and
he came to be known as "Pindapathika" Asarana
Sarana Saranaara. This begging bowl is turned out of Thai
(Siamese) clay and is aobut 250 years old. |

The
Bed of Sangharaja |

This bed was a donation by King Keerthi Sri Rajasinha and
is turned out of Jak wook. The bed is embellished with wood
carvings, in the Kandyan style. The bed was re-rattoned
and the wood carvings were restored with the assistance
of the Central Cultural Triangle. This charming piece of
furniture is an artefact dating back to 260 years. |

The
Chair of Velivita Saranankara Sangharaja |
|
This chair with four posts is triangular in shape. This
design is such that it provides no comfort ot the sitter.
This reminds on that although the Bhikku life is based on
happiness, yet is too is rooted in the three characteristics
common to each and everything in the universe. This is the
symblic depiction of the threelegged chair. Re-rattoning
and refurbishing has been done with the assistance of the
Central Cultural Triangle. This chair too is done out of
Jak wook and dates back to about 250 years. |

Visuddhi
Magga (Paper Book) |
The
Dutch Governor had donated a stock of papers to King Keerthi
Sri Rajasinha and in turn it was offered by the King to
the Sangharaja. The Sangharaja, with the assistance of his
most dynamic pupil named Irimeya Thero and a band of puplis,
recorded with his own hand, The Visuddhi Magga (Path of
Purificationa book on Buddhist metaphysics) on these papers
Thie most interesting part of this work are the exquisite
portrayings of the various stages of Lord Buddha's aspirations,
in his previous lives as an aspirant to Buddhahood (twenty
four occasions-"Suvisi Vivarana"), drawn on the
first and the large pages. Further, the Jataka stories such
as Vessantara, Dahamsonda, too are portrayed therein. This
masterpiece of writing and artistry is around 250 years
old |

Ridi
Poth Kamba (Silver Book Wrappers) |
These
two book-binders are a present form the aunt of King Keerthi
Sri Rajasingha to Velivita Sangharaja. They have been turned
out of silver with two broad bands of gold fixed internally.
On the bands of gold are found beautiful engravings of twenty-eight
Buddhas. These two binders envelope the Book of 555 Buddhist
Jatake stories (previous births of Lord Buddha in his yonder
day of aspirancy), which set in it's complete form was donated
to the Sangharaja by the said queen |
